7 Golf Simulator Tips to Lower Your Scores Indoors (and Take Them Outside)

April 2026 • FlexTee

If you've ever walked out of a simulator session thinking, “That felt great… but will it actually help on the course?”, you're not alone. The good news: indoor golf can be one of the fastest ways to improve — if you practise with a plan and use the data properly.

At FlexTee, we see it every day: golfers who stop “just hitting balls” and start training with intent quickly tighten their dispersion, sharpen their wedges, and build confidence that carries outside. Below are 7 practical golf simulator tips you can use straight away.

01

Start with one clear goal (not 100 swings)

A simulator makes it tempting to try everything — driver, wedges, new swing thought, different ball flights — all in one hour. Instead, choose ONE focus for the session.

  • Strike quality (centre contact)
  • Start line (face control)
  • Curvature (path control)
  • Distance control (carry numbers)

When you keep the goal simple, you'll leave with a measurable win rather than a vague "that was alright".

02

Use carry distance as your "truth" number

On the course, total distance changes with ground firmness, wind, and slope. Indoors, you can build a reliable baseline by focusing on carry.

  • Hit 10 shots with a mid-iron
  • Ignore the best and worst
  • Average the middle 6–8 shots

That average carry becomes your dependable number. Do this across your bag over time and you'll build a proper distance chart — one of the biggest confidence boosters in golf.

03

Track dispersion, not your best shot

Everyone loves the one perfect 7-iron. But your scoring improves when your "miss" gets better.

  • Pick a target
  • Hit 12 balls
  • Note the pattern: are you missing left, right, short, or long?

Your dispersion pattern tells you what to work on next session. If your misses are all one side, you can adjust alignment or start exploring face-to-path tendencies.

04

Learn what the key numbers actually mean

You don't need to become a launch monitor expert — but understanding a few basics will make your simulator practice far more useful.

  • Face angle: where the clubface points at impact (big driver of start line)
  • Club path: the direction the club is travelling through impact (big driver of curve)
  • Spin rate: affects control and stopping power (especially with irons and wedges)

If you're seeing a consistent miss, these numbers can explain why — and help you choose the right fix.

05

Build a 30-minute "score-lowering" practice block

If you're short on time, this is a great indoor golf practice plan:

  • 10 mins: Wedges (50–100 yards) — pick 3 distances, hit 5 balls to each, aim for consistent carry
  • 10 mins: Mid-iron start line — pick a target, try to start the ball on the same line 8/10 times
  • 10 mins: Driver dispersion — choose a fairway target, focus on a playable miss (e.g. a small fade)

This kind of structure is how you turn simulator time into lower scores.

06

Practise your pre-shot routine indoors

A simulator is perfect for building habits. Instead of rapid-fire swings, do this:

  • Step back
  • Pick a target
  • Take your normal rehearsal
  • Commit and hit

Even if you only hit 30–40 balls in an hour, they'll be higher quality — and you'll train the same decision-making you need on the first tee.

07

Pressure-test your skills with simple challenges

To make practice feel more like the course, add a bit of pressure. Try these challenges:

  • "3 in a row": land 3 wedge shots within a set distance window
  • "Fairway finder": hit 6/10 drives within a chosen fairway width
  • "Par save": play a simulator hole and aim to make par with one ball only

These games expose what breaks down under pressure — and that's where real improvement happens.
