Returning to Golf? A Simple 60-Minute Indoor Simulator Session to Rebuild Confidence (No Pressure, Just Progress)

June 2026 • FlexTee

If you're getting back into golf after a break (weeks, months, or years), the hardest part is often the first step: feeling like you can strike the ball again without embarrassment, frustration, or “where do I even start?” pressure.

This guide is for returning golfers and rusty club golfers who want a calm, structured way to rebuild confidence using an indoor golf simulator — with just enough tracking to see progress, without turning it into a numbers obsession.

The goal of your first “back to golf” session

Forget perfect swing thoughts. Your goal is to leave the session with:

  • A comfortable warm-up routine you can repeat
  • A few reliable stock shots (even if they’re not perfect)
  • A basic idea of your carry distances again
  • A simple plan for what to do next time

Why an indoor simulator is ideal when you're rusty

When you're returning to golf, the range can feel chaotic: people watching, mixed-quality balls, no clear feedback, and you can't always tell what's happening. A simulator session is different:

  • You can start gently and build up
  • You get instant feedback (carry, direction, strike pattern)
  • You can practise with purpose — even if you’ve only got an hour
  • It’s weatherproof, so you can keep momentum week to week

Your simple 60-minute “return to golf” simulator session

You'll hit roughly 60–90 balls depending on pace. Take breaks. The win is quality reps, not volume.

01

Set yourself up for a calm start (2 minutes)

Before you hit anything:

  • Pick a target (even a simple centre-line target)
  • Decide your “success rule” for today: solid contact + a repeatable shape beats chasing distance
02

Warm up with half-swings (10 minutes)

Start with wedges or a short iron and keep it easy.

  • 10 shots at 50–60% effort
  • 10 shots at 60–70% effort

What to focus on:

  • Balance at finish
  • Centre contact (not speed)
  • A predictable start direction

If you're topping it or hitting it heavy, slow down even more. Rust disappears faster when you don't fight it.

03

Rebuild your “stock shot” with one mid-iron (15 minutes)

Choose a club you used to trust (often a 7-iron or 8-iron). Hit 15 shots with the same club. Track only these two things:

  • Carry distance (rough average)
  • Start direction (left / centre / right)

At the end, write down:

  • Your average carry (roughly)
  • Your most common miss (e.g. “starts right” or “thin”)

That's your baseline. Baseline = progress, because now you're not guessing.

04

Create a simple “three-club distance ladder” (15 minutes)

Now you're going to rebuild confidence in gapping without overthinking it. Pick three clubs:

  • A wedge (or short iron)
  • A mid-iron
  • A hybrid or fairway wood (only if you feel ready)

Hit:

  • 8 shots with the wedge/short iron
  • 8 shots with the mid-iron
  • 8 shots with the hybrid/wood (optional)

What you're looking for:

  • A clear difference in carry between clubs
  • A club you can rely on when you’re not swinging your best

If the longer club feels messy, skip it. Confidence first.

05

Finish with “on-course swings”, not technical swings (15 minutes)

Pick a simple target and play a mini challenge:

  • 6 shots: “fairway-finder” tempo (80–85%)
  • 6 shots: normal tempo
  • 3 shots: your favourite club to finish on a good feeling

Your only cue: smooth tempo + balanced finish.

What to do next (so you actually improve)

If you're returning to golf, consistency comes from repeating a simple structure. For your next session, do one of these:

  • Repeat the same 60-minute session and aim for slightly tighter grouping
  • Build a basic wedge chart (great for scoring confidence)
  • Follow a structured plan over 4 weeks (best if you like clarity)

How this works at FlexTee (arrival + getting started)

When you book a bay, you'll receive the booking/access details. On arrival, you'll enter using the instructions provided, head to your assigned bay, and get set up. If you need a hand getting started, guidance is available.

Coaching (optional, but powerful for returning golfers)

If you want to rebuild confidence quickly, a short coaching plan can help you:

  • Stop guessing what to practise
  • Understand what the feedback is telling you
  • Turn one good session into repeatable progress
